European Roulette

European Roulette is considered to be the more superior version to its American sibling. But why? We have all the answers in our full game guide.

    Playing European Roulette Online

Roulette is one of the world’s most popular, widely played and easily recognisable casino games. As with other table games, roulette has quite a few different variants. Without question, European roulette is one of the most loved due to its low house edge. Find out everything there is to know about this game or pick a casino from our list, grab a bonus and starting it for yourself within minutes.

The basic idea of roulette is as follows: there’s a wheel with numbered pockets. The wheel is spun in one direction and a ball is dropped on to it in the other direction. The ball moves around the wheel on a circular track, eventually coming to a stop in one of the pockets. Whichever pocket it stops in, that is the winning number for that round.

In brick-and-mortar casinos, a croupier oversees the game, spins the wheel and drops the ball. For RNG online roulette games, there’s obviously no croupier, so the computer software controls the game.

When it comes to bets, there are quite a few you can place. They’re usually grouped into two categories: inside bets and outside bets. Inside bets tend to have low odds and high payouts, whereas outside bets have higher odds but lower payouts.

When you play the game, you’ll see the betting table. This has the numbers 1-36 laid out in three columns and twelve rows, with various bets for groups of numbers represented below and to the left-hand side of it. Above the numbers is the bet for 0. The numbers are red or black, with the exception being zero (0) which is green.

    Inside bets
    Straight/Single: covers a single number
Split: covers two adjacent numbers on the betting table
Street: covers a row of three numbers
Six Line: covers two adjacent rows
Corner: covers a square of four numbers
Trio: covers three numbers from 0, 00 and first row
    Basket: covers 0 (and 00 if possible), plus 1, 2 and 3

    Outside bets
    Red: covers all red numbers
    Black: covers all black numbers
    1 - 18: covers the numbers 1-18
    19-36: covers the numbers 19-36
    Even: covers all even numbers
    Odd: covers all odd numbers
Dozens: covers numbers in the first dozen (1-12), second dozen (13-24) or third dozen (25-36)
Columns: covers one of the three vertical columns on the betting table
Snake: covers 12 red numbers in a line that zigzags from the top to the bottom of the betting table

                      European Roulette Review

European Roulette Wheel at the microgaming casino
European Roulette features a single zero pocket and a more favourable RTP than the American wheel

European roulette is straightforward to play and it’s great fun as well. It’s always exciting watching the ball going around the wheel and waiting for it to come to a stop in one of the numbered pockets. There are lots of different game providers that have developed versions of roulette. If you like the sound of it and want to give it a go, check out the list of casinos we have handpicked for you.

They each offer European roulette in both RNG and live dealer formats covering a range of table betting limits to cater for high rollers or players on a budget. It is also worth keeping an eye open for special European roulette bonuses on the live dealer tables. These are generally cash back offers where you get a percentage of your aggregated wins or losses returned back to you.

                      What Is European Roulette?

So what is European roulette and what’s special about it? Roulette can be divided into three distinct types: European, French and American.

Both European and French roulette use the same wheel with a single zero. The only difference is there are a few additional rules to French roulette. American roulette is the black sheep of the roulette world. It uses a wheel with double zero. This increases the casino’s advantage from 2.70% up to 5.26%.

With that in mind, when browsing through your chosen casino’s games library, you should always opt to play European roulette over its American sister whenever possible.

                      European Roulette Casinos

Pretty much every casino there is has at least one roulette game to offer - in fact many have a multitude of titles to choose from. As a new player, you want to check the RTP of each variant. As mentioned above, not all roulette games are equal so you want to seek out the games offering the highest return to player values.

In addition to RNG roulette games, live dealer roulette has exploded in popularity over the past few years. Most live versions are played just like roulette in brick-and-mortar casinos. That is to say, there’s a croupier who spins the wheel, drops the ball on to it and keeps the game going. There is actually a live roulette game: Auto Roulette, where there isn’t a croupier at all - instead, the game proceeds automatically without the need for anyone overseeing it.

Whether you want to test the waters on a cutting-edge RNG game or head to the live dealer casino to play European roulette, we have the very best online roulette casinos for you. Check out our recommended sites and start your roulette adventure today.
