Helen Shephard has a busy couple of years at Supercasino: Being the baby of the presenting team she’s had an intimidating set of colleagues to keep up with, but that doesn’t seem to have proved to be any kind of a problem for the presenter and journalist with a penchant for live music and hot pepper sauce.
Initially drawn to the world of presenting in her youth whilst watching Denise Van Outen on The Big Breakfast, Shephard opted to enter showbusiness via the tried and tested route of journalism – in her case fashion writing, which made perfect sense as she has a modelling career on the go in addition to her other activities.
She does, however, tend to play down this side of her career, wisely letting her pictures do the talking - although she has worked on some very high profile events including a jewellery show at Harrods which required her to wear over £200,000 worth of diamonds.
She also has over 200 pairs of shoes at home and has other typically ‘girlie’ traits including a love of gossip, which is invariably her main priority upon arriving at the Supercasino studio every day.
In this vein, she was more than happy to divulge that the male presenters on the show are highly partial to a bit of make-up:
“Fake tan, mascara, eyeliner – they wear it all”, she was happy to report – although the shows current boy-girl presenting format means that she’s now paired with the likes of Derek Gibbons and Bryn Lucas who repeatedly take the mickey out of her on-screen – so a spot of revenge just about evens things up.
In fact, Ms Shephard holds her own very well against the male presenters, acting as a strong female role model thanks in turn to the influences of her mother, Barbie and Lois Lane.
Having such great examples to follow and believe in has strengthened own persona which was no doubt a contributory factor in her decision to spend 8 months travelling the world by backpack, although these days she’s much more settled, with an Italian greyhound to look after that takes up much of her spare time and energy.
Ironically, gambling doesn’t seem to have been a major feature in her life: She had only played roulette a few times prior to joining Supercasino, although she would like to extend her experience.
From our point of view, though, we vastly prefer seeing this extraordinary presenter fronting the show’s games rather than playing along: Check her out in the live-to-air games broadcast from 6pm until 3am daily and you’ll no doubt agree…
