For the number 13, it seems standing behind a perfect 12 led to being the ultimate path to damnation. 

Western cultures consider the number 12 to be the number of completeness. You can see this if you look at the 12 tribes of Israel, the 12 days of Christmas, and even the 12 months and zodiac signs. 

It’s unclear exactly when the negative superstitions began, but the number 13 has been linked to bringing bad luck for centuries. To this day, many believe that Friday the 13th is the ultimate day of the unlucky and a bad omen.

It’s the day you go out of your way to avoid walking under a ladder, crossing paths with a black cat, or even touching a mirror in case you might break it. 

The superstition surrounding the number 13 has a long history, and it is generally considered bad luck. In some cases, the number 13 is omitted due to its superstition. The ancient Code of Hammurabi is said to have omitted the 13th law from its list of legalities. While it could have been an error, many superstitious folks believe it proves that 13 is bad luck. In some tower casinos, the superstition has led to the 13th floor being completely omitted. 

There is even a psychological term coined for fear of the number 13 known as Triskaidekaphobia.

13 might be considered a bad luck number in western cultures, but there are many areas around the world where it is lucky. The Italians believe that 13 is the ultimate number of luck. So much so that Italian gamblers have dubbed winning a jackpot “fare il tredici”, which means ‘making the 13’.
