Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, will Friday the 13th bring me luck or be my downfall? We’re delving into superstitions surrounding the number 13 and how it may bring bad luck or luck to online casino players.

For the number 13, it seems standing behind a perfect 12 led to being the ultimate path to damnation.

Western cultures consider the number 12 to be the number of completeness. You can see this if you look at the 12 tribes of Israel, the 12 days of Christmas, and even the 12 months and zodiac signs.

Bad omen or just a number?

It’s unclear exactly when the negative superstitions began, but the number 13 has been linked to bringing bad luck for centuries. To this day, many believe that Friday the 13th is the ultimate day of the unlucky and a bad omen.

It’s the day you go out of your way to avoid walking under a ladder, crossing paths with a black cat, or even touching a mirror in case you might break it.

The superstition surrounding the number 13 has a long history, and it is generally considered bad luck. In some cases, the number 13 is omitted due to its superstition. The ancient Code of Hammurabi is said to have omitted the 13th law from its list of legalities. While it could have been an error, many superstitious folks believe it proves that 13 is bad luck. In some tower casinos, the superstition has led to the 13th floor being completely omitted.

There is even a psychological term coined for fear of the number 13 known as Triskaidekaphobia.

13: Not unlucky everywhere

13 might be considered a bad luck number in western cultures, but there are many areas around the world where it is lucky. The Italians believe that 13 is the ultimate number of luck. So much so that Italian gamblers have dubbed winning a jackpot “fare il tredici”, which means ‘making the 13’.

Casinos in Monaco often see even more activity on Friday the 13th, especially on their slot machines. Players might be tempting fate or could be under the impression the day brings extra luck. You will find many casino players even opting to bet on 13 Black when playing Roulette on Friday the 13th, which is generally an unpopular number.

Other lucky numbers

For online casino players, there is plenty of superstition in terms of lucky and unlucky numbers. In China, the numbers 3, 6, 8, and 9 are considered numbers that bring good luck. A number considered lucky across the world is the number 7. The latter is regarded as the number of perfection.

The numbers many players tend to avoid are the number 13 and, in Japan, the number 4 as it sounds the same as their word for ‘death’.

Will you test the superstitions this Friday, the 13th? Or will you be hiding in safety, waiting for the bad mojo to disappear before you continue your gameplay?
